“The truth is that our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable, unhappy, or unfulfilled. For it is only in such moments, propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts and start searching for different ways or truer answers.” – M. Scott Peck
Well here’s an opportunity to look at the glass half empty or half full. Most of the industry has been whining (not my readers of course, but, everyone else!) for the past year about the significant drop in revenues they have seen.
Honestly, those people need to get over it. To quote a famous NFL head coach, Bill Parcells, “It is what it is.” If more recruiters simply put the energy they invest in whining into actions that lead to client development they would be much better off.
Recruiting Firms that have hired me as a coach know this, ALL of them have significantly higher revenues because of a) increased activity levels and b) they are using this time period to re-engineer their businesses into more scalable operations that will prosper as we emerge from this economic downturn.
So, you are asking, “How so, Mike?” Here’s how. Re-read the quote at the top of the page. My clients, like many of you are frustrated. In deep frustration can come true and lasting change. Here are some areas you can look at right now:
- Change your office structure. There are other models of building a recruiting firm without hiring people to work both sides of the recruiting desk.
- Get rid of the people in your office that won’t step up to the challenge. First, challenge them to raise their activity levels, if they refuse, move on. Invest that money in someone who will give an honest effort.
- Redefine your vision. What exactly would your office look like in 3 years for you to have the most fun and greatest challenge?
- Join or find a mastermind group of other recruiting firm owners that are committed to growth and change as we emerge and hold each other accountable.
Guys and Gals, I could write 50 more of these, but I don’t want to overwhelm you. The main point that I discovered is that there are different and more effective office structures than the ones handed to us years ago. If you are tired, frustrated, and bored start breaking out of the old mold and start building a recruiting firm around you and your life vs building your life around your recruiting firm!
